The Power of Positive Language

As we find our rhythm to the start of a new school year, you may be noticing your child presenting with new, sometimes challenging, behaviors as they work to adapt to new schedules, school routines and expectations. You might find that the morning routine to get out the door is a struggle as your child may feel reluctant to get dressed or eat a healthy breakfast. Or after school suddenly becomes a difficult time as your child may be experiencing post-school tantrums (known as “after school restraint collapse”).

The way in which we speak to our children during these moments matters. It is easy (and very human!) to feel frustrated, annoyed, or even angry when our children appear not to listen to our instructions, but acting in these negative ways will not help a child be successful. In the attached article, The Power of Positive Language, Alicia Eaton, AMI trained Montessori guide, behavioral specialist, and parent, shares ways parents can use positive language to improve behavior and communication with their child.

Please enjoy our first Montessori Message of the school year- we hope it is helpful! As always, we are here to support our Pine Grove families- please feel welcome to reach out to your child’s teachers or administration if you are seeking guidance, have concerns, or just need a listening ear. We are all on this journey together, raising and teaching these wonderful young children!
